Marital and Family Law

Doug Kneller holds state and national certifications in marital and family law. His experience practicing in Florida family courts spans 35 years. Mr. Kneller is available for expert witness matters related to any potential malpractice of your divorce attorney.

  • Board Certification by the Florida Bar in Marital and Family Law (1995-present)

  • Board Certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy in Family Trial Law (2015-present)

  • Certified as a Family Mediator by the Supreme Court of Florida, 1995 (inactive)

  • The Family Law Section provides information to its members and the public about attorneys who practice in the areas of divorce, parenting and timesharing matters, adoption, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, and modification and enforcement of judgments, including those which involve alimony and child support. Family law includes the legal issues which arise from the relationships of husband and wife and parents and children, and the litigation and resolution of civil controversies which are brought forth as a result of those relationships. Marital and family law includes evaluating, managing, and resolving these conflicts before the institution of lawsuits, both pre- and post-judgment, as well as the pretrial and trial process.

Why hire a Board Certified attorney

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Board Certified lawyers have met The Florida Bar’s highest standards for special knowledge, skills and proficiency in various areas of law and ethics in practice. A Certified lawyer’s experience and competency have been rigorously evaluated. Board Certification stringent requirements for legal expertise and professional conduct give the public objective standards by which to evaluate attorneys.

Marital and Family Law lawyers deal with legal problems and civil suits arising from the family relationships of husbands, wives, parents and children. Marital and Family law includes pretrial and trial processes and handling and resolving controversies before, during and after the filing and resolution of lawsuits.

When you hire a board certified marital and family law attorney, you are represented by an individual who has:

  • Met the requirements for board certification;

  • Practiced law for at least five years, with 50 percent or more dedicated to marital and family law cases in circuit courts during the five years immediately preceding application, including at least seven trials;

  • Been substantially involved in interviewing clients, counseling, preparing pleadings, discovery, taking testimony, preparing evidence, negotiating settlement agreements and handling the trial of marital and family law cases, including appeals; been evaluated for competency and professionalism by judges and peers;

  • Completed the required amount of continuing legal education;

  • Passed a written examination demonstrating knowledge,skills and proficiency in the field of marital and family law to justify the representation of special competence in this area of law to the legal profession and to the public.

Choose your divorce attorney wisely.

BE ADVISED that not all attorneys who handle divorce-related matters are Board Certified by the Florida Bar. Your decision to choose a Board Certified attorney over a non-specialist is one requiring serious deliberation. It may affect the outcome of your divorce and the lives of your children and grandchildren.

According to the Florida Bar Association, there are approximately 93,000 attorneys in Florida. The total number of attorneys who are Florida Board Certified in Marital and Family law (including yours truly) is just 253.

Interview more than one attorney.

This is the smartest way to compare and contrast the personality and energy of the attorney to whom you will pay good money to draw up the terms of your divorce; the individual whose work product will affect you long after the papers are signed. While you are interviewing potential attorneys, a competent attorney will be interviewing you as well. He or she does not need your case, but will elect to work with you for a variety of reasons. For me, this is based on the passion and energy YOU bring to the table.

Thérèse Misita Truelove, Esq

Partner

Ms. Truelove is deeply passionate about the rights of children and the relationships she forms with the individuals who entrust her with their very personal legal matters.

She understands the stress and discomfort of having to seek out the services of an attorney to deal with family conflict. It is her belief that every person deserves justice, regardless of their social status or financial position. Experience, and a vested interest in the legal issues surrounding children and families, gives Thérèse uncommon insight into the inner workings of the family unit as it relates to the family law court.

Thérèse has always had the desire to help others and discovered a love of the judicial system while working as a legal assistant, paralegal and judicial assistant in Volusia County. This experience ultimately led to her legal studies at the University of Florida. It was in Gainesville that she launched her career, practicing criminal defense, personal injury and children’s law in the Alachua County courts. This career stage would last 20 years, highlighted by the respresentation of the law enforcement community and the plight of abused, abandoned and neglected children.

Born and raised in South Daytona, Thérèse had a strong desire to live closer to family and friends, prompting a return to her roots on Florida’s east coast. This move led to the formation of a law partnership with Douglas Kneller, an established Volusia County divorce attorney whom she has known for many years. iFloridaDivorce LLC is a marital and family law practice, providing quality legal services to individuals and families in Central Florida.

Thérèse became licensed to practice law in Florida in the year 2000 and entered into the iFloridaDivorce.com LLC with Doug Kneller in 2016. She is licensed to practice in all Federal courts in the state of Florida and is a member of the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar, and the Seventh Judicial Circuit Bar Association.

Mikaela Nordman, Esq

Partner

Doug and Thérèse are pleased to announce that Mikaela has accepted our offer to partner in our firm, as of May 3, 2023.

Ms. Nordman has earned this designation through her hard work and dedication to our clients. Joining our firm as a Law Clerk in 2018, she became an Associate in 2019. Mikaela has described working exclusively in family law matters with Doug and Thérèse as her “dream job.”

Ms. Nordman has demonstrated an exceptional ability to evaluate and analyze issues in complex dissolution of marriage cases. Her capacity to learn quickly and develop her skills makes her an invaluable asset to the firm and our clients.

With her intuitive ability to accurately and effectively present legal arguments on behalf of our clients, Mikaela will continue to contribute to the success of our firm in the future as she enters this new phase of her practice. She is excited to continue to grow with ifloridadivorce.com, LLC.

Ms. Nordman is a member of the Florida Bar, as well as the Young Lawyers division of the Florida Bar and the Board of Volusia Flagler Association of Women Lawyers.

Having set her sights on family law early on, Mikaela was thrilled to land a clerkship with iFloridaDivorce.com LLC in the summer of 2018. Her determination and performance quickly earned her an Associate position.

Mikaela was sworn in to the Florida Bar on September 20, 2019, surrounded by her proud family. When she reported for work at iFD, she soon found herself fully immersed in the eye-opening, inner workings of a busy divorce law practice. Garnering knowledge and insight under the tutelage of Mr. Kneller and Ms. Truelove, this talented, young attorney has decidedly found her career niche.

A fourth-generation Volusia County resident, Mikaela grew up in DeLand, Florida, in a close-knit family. She has three brothers. Her parents have been together since they were fifteen years old, which Mikaela says has given her a positive, albeit romantic, outlook on the success of marital bonds. Enrolling in law school, she follows in the footsteps of her father, Michael P. Nordman, a Board Certified Real Property attorney in DeLand.

Graduating from the International Baccalaureate program at DeLand High School prepared Mikaela for the rigors of college, law school and private practice. She earned her undergraduate degree in Sociology and graduated from the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law.

It was while working as a file clerk in Gainesville that Mikaela met Ms. Truelove who would become her mentor, friend and employer. Mikaela credits Thérèse for showing her the ropes, how to do effective legal research and above all, the importance of understanding what a client’s goals are, especially when it comes to their kids. She very much enjoys her professional relationship with Mr. Kneller and says she has learned from him the importance of looking at the big picture, using unconventional approaches to issues and reading every case and rule book she can get her hands on.

Mikaela is an artist who enjoys drawing, painting, photography and singing. She loves creating cakes and cookies and is certain she will own a bakery in her next life.

Wendy Moore

Administrative Assistant

Juggling a variety of responsibilities for Mr. Kneller and Ms. Truelove, Wendy manages the day-to-day operations of the firm. Keeping track of a zillion things every day is a tall order and she is much appreciated for keeping so many balls in the air.

Wendy is passionate and knowlegable about horticulture and skilled in landscape design. In her first year with the firm, she planted and continues to fawn over the lush bamboo specimens that form the perimeter of the office parking lot.

Veruska Brawner

Doug refers to Veruska as “our secret weapon.” Her duties as a Client Liason include managing incoming and outgoing discovery requests. She is an asset to our practice, proficient in general legal accounting and possessing unsurpassed organizational skills, even by forensic accounting standards.

Veruska speaks Portuguese and Spanish and admits that is not always easy being so far away from her family in Brazil.

Yvonne McDaniel

Legal Assistant

Yvonne is steady at the task and will work nonstop until it is completed. She possesses a wonderful dedication to our clients. She was seeking a ‘learning opportunity’ when she joined iFD. That goal has been full-filled in our busy law office. She says that she enjoys her fast-paced work days and the camaraderie of the people she works with.

With her father in the Airforce, Yvonne was born in Germany; the family also lived in California for many years. She ended up graduating from Mainland HS in Daytona Beach.

Married for 24 years, Yvonne has five sons, one daughter, two grandchildren, and three dogs. Now that her kids are grown, she says she loves spending time with her growing family, but has more time for trips to the beach and walking for exercise.

Amy Garrett

Legal Assistant | Case Staffing Manager | Client Liaison

Amy is our de facto office manager and has worked on and off with Mr. Kneller for over 25 years. Her ability to multi-task and attention to detail is unsurpassed. With her ready smile and quick wit, Amy is an experienced, top-notch legal professional.

Amy hit the ground running when she returned to work at iFD, having spent the prior decade raising her two daughters with Johnny, her husband of 14 years. As a family, they enjoy living in rural Flagler County, growing vegetables and caring for their menagerie. The fresh eggs that Amy brings to the office are always admired and appreciated.

Amy and her family lead an active life that includes a love of fishing and farming, 4H and homeschooling. She says she loves a good farmstand and sitting outdoors by a fire.

Laura LeCras

Bookkeeper

Laura knows every fee and cost entry for every case and is a most diligent numbers person. She is wonderful.

Two fun facts about our bookkeeper, Laura: She loves shoes, and her dog is probably bigger than your dog. Laura and her family have a female Great Dane, ‘Charley,’ who Laura says is 130 pounds of sweetness. Laura and her husband (who was born and raised in South Daytona) also have an amazing son.

An artist at heart, Laura loves photography and making art. She grew up as an ‘army brat,’ moving often, and has physically been in all 50 states. She settled in Daytona Beach in 1986, but she still loves to travel. For 12 years she worked at Dillard’s where she retired from her role as Operations Manager to focus on raising her son. Laura returned to work for Clinique as a traveling event coordinator for another 12 years. Her beloved work came as the Executive Assistant for her father, who was the President of the Florida State League (the governing office for High A Minor League Baseball).
